Education in Communication with Support

Hilke Osika

Booklet: 84 pages

Communication is as important as eating and drinking. Without it, life becomes worthless.

It is not certain that a person who cannot speak also has nothing to say.

Everyone, yes, everyone who cannot speak would be given the opportunity to communicate in a different way.

ANNE MCDONALD, AUSTRALIA

David (cannot speak at all) : The greatest joy for autistic people is to be able to write with you. We cannot speak but we have so much to tell. Now we want to hear that we are happy to say something important! It is that we want to be seen as people of normal intelligence. That is the most important thing about Communication with Support. We can write everything you would say. The words are mine but the spirit is everyone's. Now we can finally participate in the community! For many years we have not been able to do this! We want everyone who cannot speak to be able to write with Communication with Support. That way we can be part of your community.

“Communication with support is the most important thing that has happened in my life” according to several Communication with support writers without speech ability. Once a person without verbal language ability has learned to use Communication with support, and has a support person who is safe and secure in their support, a revolutionary change occurs in the life of the disabled person. Contact with the environment takes on a completely new character. Suddenly the person can tell how he or she experiences different situations, what he or she is interested in, how he or she views what he or she expresses and does, what he or she needs or desires and much, much more. The person becomes visible in a new way and gains a new relationship to what he or she is experiencing. This can mean that reactions of various kinds such as aggression, anxiety, compulsive actions, worry, etc. can be reduced by the person being able to explain their behavior. Parents say that their family situation has changed significantly for the better.

Training in Communication with support and much more is described in this book, produced by Hilke Osika, mother of three children with severe autism, who has written several books through the Siljans Måsar Publishing House:
