Stories about death and life
Eva Widenby & Helene Virro
Hardcover, 150 pages with color illustrations
“It was a late evening in August and the candles cast long shadows at the kitchen table. The day had been long and sunny and the fine Spanish mare Distraida had fallen asleep. Her grave was behind the stable, right at the edge of the forest. It was covered with hay because Distraida had starved for a long period in Spain. She was covered with autumn phlox in fiery colors that sparkled in purple and blue-violet against her white fur.”
That same evening, Eva Widenby and Helene Virro realized that it was time to write the story of the horses they had lived with and that they had followed until death. The story is about courage, the desire for freedom, spirituality, healing and moments of closeness - with mutual respect between horse and human. It is also a story about their everyday lives, where the lead horse Viking, for example, showed how he could distinguish between dinner and coffee porcelain, and where the breakaway queens Sonya and Littla Hind determined their own entrance times. The horses took the two women on a magical journey, in a way they hardly thought was possible. In their own unique way, they have all shared their worlds and their personalities, which the reader can now take part in Lovsång till hästen – berätteler om döden och livet .
Eva Widenby and Helene Virro have lived together on their own horse farms where they have run courses, tourism and treatment businesses. For 20 years they have had horses of different breeds and origins, and many of the horses have found sanctuary with them.
Votes about the book:
"What a fantastic book you have written! It touches me so much that tears flow. I thought I would be able to read straight through, but after the introductory text and the story of the Spanish woman, it was hard to see for the tears that were flowing. Tomorrow I will continue with Habil's story. I am so happy that I had the opportunity to read a book like this. You have really put your soul into choosing the words that form your story. Thank you."
I read your book very, very slowly, it's too beautiful to read straight through. One horse at a time and then I think about that horse for a long time before I'm ready for the next one..."
"If you want to give something extra nice for Christmas to someone who loves horses (or simply likes animals), I have a great tip here: The book is as beautiful as a day, giving a chance for tears and reflection but also joy and a little laughter - about the beauty in life - in the meeting between two-legged and four-legged - This is a book of the soul - written by two friends who, a little above the ordinary, gave everything for their four-legged friends - in life and in death."
"I'm reading it! It makes me SEE the importance of seeing my animals. Stop and HEAR what they have to say to me. It doesn't matter if you're head over heels in love with horses, dogs or other animals - the book touches the soul. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! Also very nice as a gift!"

“It is so significant and important.”
"What an incredibly nice book! I was just going to browse a little first, started reading and couldn't stop... So beautifully told with both the beautiful, the sad, the humorous, the difficult and the happy. Thank you for sharing with the horses and you!"
"I have just finished reading, one horse at a time, horses that I have never met but still got to know through the nice descriptions. I think you so wisely describe the importance of listening, we humans are often in such a hurry that we don't listen to each other, our animals or ourselves for that matter."
“Beautifully and sensitively written! Thank you!”
“The book carries a great light!”
"So beautiful and well-crafted. I've already had a cozy and touching moment with the first stories. Thank you very much!"
"Thank you for your fantastic book. It goes straight to the soul!"
"How beautiful it is, the Book! I was sucked into it and read it over and over, completely absorbed in the horses' stories. You have narrated their stories so beautifully and respectfully. One moment I have a smile on my face and the next moment tears have flowed."
